Fire safety

Fire is bold, exciting, and beautiful, but also very dangerous.  For this reason, any venue requesting fire performance must meet certain specifications before we agree to light up.  We have never had an accident performing with fire, but we insist on playing it safe.

Space

Outdoor performance spaces are usually acceptable for fire, and whenever possible, we recommend them over indoor spaces.  Indoor spaces carry more risk and must have appropriate ceilings, floors, and other requirements.  Please take extreme care in deciding whether to hire a fire act indoors.  For any fire gig, we will bring non-fire equipment as well and reserve the right to perform without fire if we consider it unsafe.  We are not responsible for accidents caused by unsafe conditions.

Ceilings should be at least 10' high.  Also, we need space.  Extremely crowded areas or narrow hallways, for instance, will not do.

Let's face it, every juggler drops every now and then, so before requesting fire, please take into consideration whether a dropped torch would be disastrous.  Normally, a dropped torch won't cause any damage if recovered quickly, but if the ground is flammable, absorbs and retains fuel, or may melt or char easily, it is not suitable for fire.  If the space is indoors, we will not juggle over carpet or fabric.  Concrete, dirt, grass, ceramic tile, linoleum, or even finished wood are usually OK.  If in doubt, ask.

If your smoke alarm or sprinkler system is especially sensitive, they may go off during the performance.  Please do not turn them off to avoid this; rather, if this is a concern, it's probably best to take the fire juggling outside or stick with non-flaming props.

Equipment

Any fire equipment you have handy is welcome.  We especially like to have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket ready, if you have one available.  We can bring towels and a bucket for water.

If your space meets the above requirements, we can provide fire juggling for walkaround or stage shows.  We do not offer instruction in juggling fire.
